Why CodeGeek Supports WordPress Accessibility Day

Deciding to sponsor WordPress Accessibility Day again was one of the easiest choices CodeGeek made this year. CodeGeek is committed to the belief that the web should be accessible to everyone, and supporting the broader web community in achieving this important goal is a core value of the company.

Another key reason for their sponsorship is the outstanding quality of WordPress Accessibility Day itself. In previous years, the Geeks attended many sessions and was consistently impressed by the high caliber of many of the sessions and presentations.

For CodeGeek, it’s essential to continually support web accessibility education, and their positive experiences at past WordPress Accessibility Day events made them eager to be an active part and supporter of it once again.

What CodeGeek Has Done to Maintain and Accessible Presence

In 2021, CodeGeek rebuilt their website from the ground up, with accessibility as a top priority.

Since the initial launch, CodeGeek has continued to refine the website to enhance its accessibility. Their efforts have focused on several key areas:

  1. They installed the Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker plugin to identify and resolve additional accessibility issues. Grateful that this tool also helps keep accessibility at the forefront when new content is added to the site.
  2. They addressed color contrast issues on the website. Previously, some lighter green and yellow background elements with white heading text were not as readable as they should be. Adjustments were made to the website’s color palette to pass contrast requirements.
  3. CodeGeek began updating past blog posts that feature videos and PDF downloads to make them accessible, including adding accurate captions, transcripts, and text and button links.
  4. They also revisited their monthly newsletter through the lens of web accessibility and applied the same standards. Updates have already been made to headings, color contrast, and image alt text. Next, they plan to run the newsletter through a screen reader to identify additional improvements.

CodeGeek’s ongoing goal is to continually maintain and enhance the accessibility of their digital content and improve the accessibility of our own website so that anyone who visits us has a wonderful, usable experience.

CodeGeek Has the Tools (and Process) to Help You on Your Accessibility Journey

CodeGeek is dedicated to offering top-notch web accessibility services to clients, whether it’s conducting a thorough accessibility audit on an existing site, building a new website with accessibility from the ground up, or providing ongoing monthly accessibility auditing and remediation plans.

For clients with existing websites, CodeGeek offers two key services:

  1. Accessibility Review – Every website can be more accessible. With an initial Accessibility Review, CodeGeek dives deep into your site to identify and recommend specific improvements that enhance accessibility.
  2. Monthly Accessibility Plans (MAP) – CodeGeek provides monthly accessibility audits and fixes to ensure your website is as accessible as possible for everyone. These ongoing plans offer more impactful and quicker results compared to a one-time review.

When it comes to building new websites, CodeGeek integrates accessibility right from the start:

  • In the discovery phase, they outline specific enhancements to boost your website’s accessibility.
  • During the design process, they follow all WCAG guidelines, ensuring your website design is ADA compliant and user-friendly for all visitors.
  • In development, they employ automated and hands-on empirical testing to verify that your site functions properly and meets WCAG standards.
  • Before launching, CodeGeek provides training to help you understand how to keep your website content accessible – ensuring clients feel comfortable when adding new pages or making updates.
  • After launch, CodeGeek offers Monthly Accessibility Plans ensuring your site remains accessible over time. Accessibility is an ongoing effort, and CodeGeek is here to offer regular guidance, audits, and fixes to keep your site in top shape.

On top of that, CodeGeek has developed two web products with accessibility at the forefront:

  • CodeGeek Blocks plugin for WordPress
  • CodeGeek Theme for WordPress

With these tools, new websites built by CodeGeek start off with clean, thorough accessibility audits.
