About Equalize Digital
Equalize Digital is a mission-driven WordPress agency striving to build a world where all people have equal access to information, products, and tools on the web, regardless of ability.
Equalize Digital’s Accessibility Checker plugin is an automated accessibility scanning tool that helps WordPress websites become and stay accessible. Accessibility Checker provides native reports on the post-edit screen so content managers can identify and resolve problems before they hit publish.
Equalize Digital Accessibility Checker makes accessibility governance easier and more affordable: no waiting for a weekly scan to run and having to go back to fix issues on already published pages, and no per-page fees. For WordPress developers and agencies, Accessibility Checker is a great way to start identifying accessibility problems on your client websites. Use it to test new websites you build or start growing recurring revenue with accessibility remediation plans.
Equalize Digital is proud to support WordPress Accessibility Day as an organizer and sponsor, and also is the team behind the official WordPress Accessibility Meetup.
Why Equalize Digital Supports WordPress Accessibility Day
Equalize Digital has been proud to sponsor WordPress Accessibility Day for the past three years, and their CEO, Amber Hinds, is on the WP Accessibility Day board.
Equalize Digital’s mission is focused on building a more accessible web that works for everyone, regardless of ability. Education is a core part of our offerings – as the host of WordPress Accessibility Meetup – and they’re committed to giving back to the WordPress community. Their founders, Amber, Chris Hinds, and Steve Jones, have benefited from others in the WordPress community who openly share their knowledge.
The beauty of WordPress is that there are infinite ways to learn WordPress development, web design, and SEO best practices via online tutorials. It’s easy to start working with WordPress thanks to many bloggers and YouTubers who share content. However many of these tutorials don’t follow accessibility best practices or reference accessibility at all. This is a gap that WordPress Accessibility Day (and the WordPress Accessibility Meetup) seeks to resolve.
They truly believe in the mission of WordPress Accessibility Day: bringing free accessibility education to a global community, and hope that their sponsorship (and organizer effort) will ultimately create more awareness that leads to a more accessible web.
Sharing Navigational Improvements and Gaady Award Winners
Equalize Digital is constantly working to improve that accessibility of their own website and WordPress plugins. Last year, CTO, Steve Jones, completely reworked the accessibility of the navigation menus. He added separate buttons that allow keyboard-only users to bypass dropdowns if desired, rather than being forced to tab through them before getting to the next top-level item. During a WordPress Accessibility Meetup, he presented on how he did this and shared the code – watch the recording here. Underscoring Equalize Digital’s commitment to sharing useful accessibility education.
Equalize Digital is honored to be a 2023 Gaady Award winner for their Accessibility Checker plugin. This award was given in recognition of their own internal commitment to accessibility in their software and also in recognition of their role in making accessibility testing easier and more affordable for WordPress website owners.
